- Wings in Folklore & Imagination – Why We Love Dressing Up!
There’s something special about wings. Whether it's fairies, angels, or make-believe creatures, wings always seem to spark joy and wonder. For children, they open the door to magical adventures — and for us grown-ups, they bring back memories of childhood play. Wings in Storytelling and Folklore Wings have always had a place in the stories we tell. Think of Icarus flying too close to the sun, or faeries in Irish folklore flitting between worlds. Angels are symbols of light and protection. And who can forget Tinkerbell or the Tooth Fairy? When kids put on wings, it’s not just a costume — it’s the beginning of a new story. Why Wings Matter in Play Wearing wings can transform a child into: A butterfly flitting through a garden A fairy queen ruling a magical land A superhero with the power to fly A forest creature on a woodland adventure This kind of imaginative play is brilliant for building confidence, creativity and storytelling skills. It helps children explore ideas, feelings and characters in a playful, safe way. How We Make Our Wings All our wings at A is for Alice are handmade in our Birmingham garden workshop. We use soft felt and comfy elastic straps — so little ones can move freely and happily. They’re UKCA tested and designed for ages 3–7. You can choose from a full rainbow of colours — and match them with crowns, masks and wands to make your own special set. A Fun Game to Try: Let your child design their own set of wings, and give them starting points: “Who might wear these?” “Where are they off to?” “What are their wings made from?” You’ll be amazed at the stories they come up with. A simple costume can unlock a whole magical world.

- How open-ended role play sparks creativity
Open-ended play is when children use toys in unlimited ways - guided by their imagination, not instructions. There's no right or wrong way to play, just creativity, curiosity and fun. Costumes don't tell the whole story, they can leave space for the child to write it themselves. Instead of fixed character Disney princesses or Marvel superheroes, opened ended dress up play let's your child become anything they can imagine. Wings, wands, crowns and capes are all perfect story starters, these simple pieces can spark big adventures. They encourage role play, problem solving, language development, and emotional exploration. Dressing up can invite children outdoors, to make potions, rescue frogs, gather feathers and tell stories in the garden. Choose thoughtfully designed items with quality materials that will last beyond a single party. They're not just costumes, they're part of your child's creative toolkit. Let your child tell their own story, explore our full collection of open-ended dress up pieces - made to spark magic, stories and adventure.
- 5 Wildflowers to Inspire Magical Nature Play
There’s something utterly enchanting about a child discovering a wildflower in the garden or on a walk — tiny petals clutched in sticky hands, turned into fairy soup, flower crowns, or even treasure for a woodland creature. At A is for Alice, nature is one of our greatest inspirations. Whether we're designing forest fairy wings or glittering wands, we believe children’s imaginations bloom best when they’re outdoors — and wildflowers make the perfect storytelling companions. Here are five of our favourite British wildflowers to inspire magical nature play this summer. 1. Daisies Simple and iconic, the daisy is often the very first flower a child picks. Their sturdy stems are ideal for threading into chains, making daisy crowns for fairies, forest kings, and brave explorers. Play ideas: Make daisy chains for dolls and soft toys Press into summer journals Pairs perfectly with: Our Woodland Crowns or Gold Glitter Star Wands. 2. Buttercups The bright yellow glow of a buttercup under the chin is a nostalgic joy for many of us — and for children, it becomes a “sunshine spell” or a way to tell if someone’s secretly a fairy in disguise. Play ideas: Use petals as "gold" in treasure hunts Stir into mud kitchen creations for pretend sunshine potions Draw and colour your own pretend buttercups for indoor play Pairs perfectly with: Our Rainbow Crowns and Gold Glitter Accessories. 3. Clover This soft, fluffy bloom is a favourite for bees and a brilliant prompt for pollinator play. Encourage little ones to buzz like bees, collecting pretend nectar and imagining life in the hive. Play ideas: Bee role play with bee headband and wings Count how many bees visit one patch of clover Invent stories about a fairy bee queen or magical garden Pairs perfectly with: Our Felt Frog Mask and Floral Bee Headband. 4. Yarrow With its frilly, feathered leaves and clusters of tiny blooms, yarrow feels both delicate and ancient. Historically used in folklore and medicine, it invites children to concoct potions and elixirs. Play ideas: Mix into a pretend woodland potion Use the stalks as "swords" for fairy duels Press flowers to make midsummer bookmarks Pairs perfectly with: Our Cream Felt Crown and Woodland Animal Masks. 5. Cranesbill Delicate and cheerful, cranesbill blooms in shades of pink, purple and blue and is often found tumbling through cottage gardens and hedgerows. Its rounded petals and soft scent make it perfect for flower potions and fairy perfumes. Play ideas: Collect fallen petals for “perfume” or fairy tea Create tiny bouquets for dolls and animal toys Use the distinctive leaves in rubbings or prints Pairs perfectly with: Our Pink and Purple Glitter Crowns and Star Headbands All of these flowers can be found in UK parks, gardens, or countryside paths — perfect for a weekend adventure or a slow afternoon in the garden. Just remember: teach children to pick responsibly, leave plenty for pollinators, and be careful around unknown plants (like foxglove). Add a wand, a crown, a pair of wings, and a head full of stories — and you’ve got everything a child needs for a summer of imaginative play.
- Painting Pebble Bees!
It's World Bee Day on May 20th, so in honour of our stripy little friends, I've got a cute bee themed craft for you! I really enjoyed a little bit of rock painting today, creating these sweet little bee pebbles. This is such a nice easy craft to do with your kids - I used paint pens (these ones are £6 from The Works) but this would work just as well with acrylic or poster paint, or even nail varnish. Just make sure you let each layer dry before doing the next so you don't end up with a smears. You've then got some cute garden decorations, plant pot friends, small world creatures or the start of a counting game! Enjoy! 🐝 Bee Pebble Craft Tutorial
